Requirements

The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, punctual and responsible, and customer-service oriented. He or she must be able to lift up to 20 pounds, refrain from cell phone use during one's shift, and record statistical information.

Work Schedule

The Reference Desk Assistant will, in conjunction with the Administrative and Instructional Librarian, make a semester-long schedule at the beginning of the semester, between 8 AM and 12 AM (midnight) Mondays through Thursdays, 8 AM and 5 PM on Fridays, 10 AM to 5 PM on Saturdays and 1:30 PM to 12 AM (midnight) on Sundays, for up to 10 hours per week. 

Location

This position is assigned to Abbot Vincent Taylor Library departments and offices.

Responsibilities

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Complete training with the Learning Technologies and Information Fluency Librarian
  • Keep the library environment as comfortable as possible for patrons
  • Answer basic reference questions, such as basic directional questions, helping patrons find library materials in the online catalog (Alexandria) and the stacks, assistance with basic questions concerning computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and library databases
  • Make referrals when appropriate
  • Refill printer paper and help students with printing
  • Shelving and shelf-reading in the Reference Collections
  • Special tasks requested by the library staff

The successful candidate will have an exemplary work ethic, be able to assist the Abbot Vincent Taylor Library staff and students, understand the “big picture” while also not be afraid to roll up his or her sleeves to do the work that will support an academic community that nourishes the mind, body, and spirit of the whole student.
